Toyota has emerged as a clear winner from the'dieselgate scandal
The brand has confirmed that it's phasing out diesel passenger vehicles in Europe over the course of 2018, starting with cars like the Auris, according engadget's report.
The Japanese company is the world's third largest vehicle manufacturer but it has always struggled to match that impact in Europe.
On the eve of this week's Geneva Motor Show, Europe's first major auto show of the year, Toyota said it will stop selling diesel cars in Europe, beginning the phase-out this year. Registrations have become increasingly weighted towards hybrids since 2015, when sales were split evenly between hybrids and diesels. For several years, hybrid versions dominated.
"Built on the new TNGA platform (also underpinning the C-HR crossover and a variety of other future Toyota models), the 2019 Auris is 40 mm (1.6") longer than the outgoing generation, with all of them going into the vehicle's wheelbase. Last week, for example, it was reported that automotive giant Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to eliminate diesel engines from all its passenger vehicles by 2022.
Last year, almost 15 percent of Toyota's sales in Europe were from diesel vehicles, down from 30 percent in 2012.
The CEO of German automaker Volkswagen says businesses like his need clarity about new trade measures announced by the Trump administration before they can decide what to do.
The current Auris powertrain line-up consists of five conventional engines and one hybrid powertrain.
The Toyota Aygo's mid-life refresh brings about a selection of visual and technical updates, with the 2018 auto on show for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. Toyota hasn't issued any details on the output or performance of the regular petrol, a 1.2-litre turbo, but we'd expect it to have similar figures to the version that's in the C-HR (and the current Auris); so around 114bhp. Customers have a choice of a 122-hp 1.8-liter or a 180-hp 2.0-liter hybrid powertrains. The models account for less than 10 percent of its sales in the region.
However, the company will continue to offer diesel models of its Land Cruiser SUV, Hilux pickup truck and Proace light commercial vehicles as some customers prefer the higher torque that's offered by diesel engines.
