Civilian death toll tops 1000 in assault on Syria's Eastern Ghouta

Syrian forces attacking eastern Ghouta 'have surrounded rebels in Douma'

But Reuters reported a spokesman for Jaish al-Islam, one of the two main insurgent groups in eastern Ghouta, denied that it had fallen into government hands.

The UN refugee agency's Syria representative, who entered Ghouta with Monday's convoy, said the area was "on the verge of a major disaster".

The government has opened what it says are several safe routes out of eastern Ghouta for civilians, but none are known to have left so far and Damascus and Moscow accuse the rebels of preventing them from fleeing the fighting.

The most densely populated areas in eastern Ghouta are still under rebel control, including the towns of Douma, Harasta, Kfar Batna, Saqba and Hammouriyeh.

The presence of H.T.S. has been a chief justification cited by the Syrian government and its most powerful ally, Russia, for the scorched-earth bombing campaign they are carrying out in Eastern Ghouta.

After a ferocious month-long government assault, thousands of rebel fighters and civilians were bussed out of the city's east. They encompass multiple factions, including jihadists, and in-fighting between them has led to past losses of ground to the Syrian government.

Around a dozen imprisoned fighters from a group linked to al-Qaeda's former affiliate in Syria were allowed to leave the besieged enclave on Friday. The latter has in the past fought alongside HTS.

According to the report, the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad is responsible for the use of sarin in the Khan Sheikhoun incident, while Daesh* is responsible for the use of sulfur mustard in Umm Hawsh. HTS was excluded from a ceasefire agreed at the United Nations that has yet to come into effect.

The reconciliation center's hotline has been receiving calls about the humanitarian plight in Eastern Ghouta.

The Observatory reported that troops are advancing under the cover of attacks by warplanes and helicopter gunships and confirmed that government forces captured large parts of Misraba.

According to reports, more than 400,000 people still reside in the region, seven years into the Syrian civil war. Numerous victims are children.

An aid convoy that failed to deliver humanitarian supplies to Syria's besieged eastern Ghouta last week due to violence delivered "urgently needed" aid on Friday despite fighting, which took place extremely close to the convoy, the Red Cross said.

At least 20 civilians - including four children - were killed in Douma on Saturday, in addition to 17 civilians in other battlefront towns, said the Observatory.
