But as the new Green Bay Packers GM has made it clear, these are not Ted Thompson's Packers anymore.

The Packers confirmed Nelson's release later Tuesday afternoon. Well, that's where 10-year Packers wideout Jordy Nelson comes in. Thus, the 2018 season will be a comparison of what Graham does for the Packers' offense to what Nelson could have given them.

It's a harsh reality in the National Football League but today's decision by Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst to release popular veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson still came as a jolt. He was scheduled to count over a little over $12.5 million on the Packers' cap in 2018.

Just minutes after reports of the Packers adding tight end Jimmy Graham surfaced, more shocking news popped up in Green Bay, as the Packers will reportedly release longtime wide receiver Jordy Nelson according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. Only two have caught more than five TDs in a season there as well: Finley in 2011 and Richard Rodgers in 2015.

This marks the third straight offseason in which the Packers have added an athletic veteran tight end in free agency, having signed Jared Cook in 2016 and Martellus Bennett past year.

First-year general manager Brian Gutekunst called Nelson "one of the great Packers who played here". His market is big, however, and Green Bay has a lot of competition. "He has been an exemplary professional and teammate and greatly contributed to our success".

In Nelson, the Packers moved on from one of their all-time best receivers; he ranks third in team history in catches (550), fifth in receiving yards (7,848) and second in touchdowns (69). He was also the NFL's comeback player of the year. Although his yards per catch were a surprisingly low 9.1 (down from a career-best 14.2 in 2016), there's still a role for him to help patrol the middle of the field.

Graham and fellow tight end Luke Willson were both unrestricted free agents heading into the offseason for the Seahawks. And after the Packers rewarded Davante Adams, who continued to produce despite the QB instability, with a monster extension in December, the writing was on the wall for Nelson to be released.
