Video: Here's The Disgraced Broward County Deputy Just Standing There During Florida Shooting
Surveillance footage form Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shows former school resource officer Scot Peterson and his response to the shooting - which has been criticised after it was disclosed that he did not immediately enter and confront the shooter - there last month.
Sheriff Scott Israel blasted Peterson eight days after the shooting, saying Peterson should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer".
A Florida judge entered a not-guilty plea for Nikolas Cruz, who faces a possible death penalty for a massacre at a high school in February that killed 17 people and triggered a nationwide walkout of students on Wednesday.
He then quickly turns and jumps into a golf cart, along with a staff member, to investigate the gunshots at the 1200 building. The Broward County Sheriff's office is not releasing its findings from its internal investigation until the case is closed.
Several media organizations sued the BSO and Broward County Public Schools for the release of the video recordings from the exterior of the Parkland school. The Broward sheriff's office serves as the police department for Parkland.
His attorney Joseph DiRuzzo claims that Peterson believed the shots were outside; adding that he had been following his training by "taking cover and prompting a lockdown".
Prosecutors had previously asked the judge to deny the petition by the USA TODAY Network, the Miami Herald, CNN and others who argued that the footage should be released because of overwhelming public interest.
About 22 minutes into the video, police lights can be seen at the far corner of the building. BSO policy calls for deputies to engage an active shooter and eliminate the threat, but does not explicitly say an officer "must" enter a building.
While he was outside the building, Peterson got on his radio and took a position where he could see the western entry, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israelsaid.
Even President Trump criticized the officer's alleged inaction, saying he would have run into the school if he were in that same situation.
