Mhd. Ashraf Sehrai was elected as chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat replacing Syed Shah Geelani
Speaking over the major development in Tehreek-e-Hurriyat spokesperson of the party said, "The TeH led by Syed Ali Geelani today held a meeting at its office in Srinagar and elected senior member Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai as the party chairman".
Geelani held the post of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman since the party was created following a split in the Hurriyat Conference in 2003.
Sehrai was elected chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat unanimously at a meeting of its executive committee after Geelani chose to step down. The decision has ended the strain in the Hurriyat on who will lead the flock after Geelani, whose deteriorating health has been a cause of concern.
Serhai was presently general secretary of the TeH and has been a trusted man of Geelani for the past about 60 years when both were in the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the TeH said in a unanimous decision taken in an extraordinary meeting of its highest decision making body (Majlis-e-Shoora) of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat appointed Mohammad Ashraf Sehraie as interim Chairman, till the organizational elections, to be held late this year.
Senior Hurriyat leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai replaced Geelani as the chairman of the party.
Sehrai's appointment as the interim chairman signals a change of guard in the separatist group at a time when some of the important TeH members are in the custody of the NIA, on charges of having received secret funding for fomenting unrest in Kashmir.
Altaf, who was famously known to be Geelani's right hand, is now in Tihar Jail. They are now detained in Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
The NIA has named 10 other Kashmiri separatists including Hurriyat leader Syed Shah Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah.
