Apple's March 27 event: What to expect and how to watch
Apple is said to be planning three new iPhones this year. Apple resorted to launching the iPhone X later in the year compared to its traditional cycles. Indeed, per DisplayMate's testing, the display found on the Galaxy S9 is actually more color accurate than the one found on the iPhone X.
The iPhone X, Apple's first OLED phone, uses Samsung technology.
The successor to the iPhone X will stick to an OLED display of just about the same size 5.85.
Apple's previous flagships, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X didn't sell as well as expected, and so Apple is intending to commence the production process of its upcoming smartphones earlier to revive the sales of its smartphones. The report from Digitimes Research analyst Luke Lin mentions that the 5.8-inch variant of the second generation iPhone X will be much cheaper to manufacture than the current device.
"...the new device's MBOM will be more than 10 percent lower than that for iPhone X. He added that the MBOM of the iPhone X was more than US$400 in 2017". That's in part due to some recent Apple news leaks, but also because the event, which is taking place at a high school, is billed as focusing on "creative new ideas for teachers and students", which suggests products at the affordable end of the company's line-up.
Apple is reportedly planning to launch three iPhones in 2018, much like what the company had done past year at its Keynote event.
Interestingly, Lin also said in the report that Apple had previously planned to launch a 5.85-inch model with an LCD panel to keep the MBOM in check. However, the project was suspended in mid-February and must have been eventually terminated later on.
The stock prices of rival display makers such as Japan Display, Sharp, and Samsung all fell after BloombergreportedApple's screen development initiative.
Reports have emerged that Apple is developing its own MicroLED displays for its upcoming devices so as to reduce its reliance on other display manufacturers. It is unlikely that the technology will reach an iPhone for at least three to five years as MicroLED screens are more hard to produce than the current displays, Bloomberg said. The third option, meanwhile, will have an edge-to-edge display and Face ID similar to the iPhone X but with an LCD display and aluminum edges.
The purported iPhone SE 2 features an aluminum chassis instead of the stainless steel frame used on the iPhone X. The back also features a vertically aligned dual-camera setup that seems to be inspired by the iPhone X. The company has apparently been working to bring MicroLED to the Apple Watch with these rumors pointing to as soon as this year.
