AMC to open first cinema in Saudi Arabia in two weeks

AMC Theaters Back On Movie Pass App

Director Ryan Coogler's blockbuster will become the first film screened in Saudi Arabia theaters following the end of a 35-year ban on commercial cinemas.

The opening, set for April 18 in a new AMC-branded movie theater in Riyadh, marks another aspect of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's efforts to modernize and transform Saudi society and relax its famously prohibitive religious rules.

Black Panther will show for five days followed by Avengers: Infinity War on April 26.

Movie theatres will not be segregated by gender, according to reports.

Saudi Arabia's highest-ranking cleric warned in January, 2017 of the "depravity" of cinemas, saying they would corrupt morals.

AMC is expected to open 30 to 40 cinemas in 15 cities over the next five years. He is now touring the United States seeking investments to help broaden the economy and lessen its dependence on oil.

Entertainment has been granted the first licence to operate cinemas, with Saudi state media saying the USA giant is expected to open 40 cinemas across 15 Saudi cities over the next five years.

Global theater chain AMC announced this week it has received the first cinema license for Saudi Arabia since movie theaters were banned in the 1980s. Despite the cinema ban, Hollywood films and recent television series are widely watched at home and discussed. The venue seats 600 across orchestra and balcony levels, and comes with marble bathrooms.

Saudi Arabia will soon welcome Black Panther.

AMC (NYSE:AMC), the biggest movie theatre chain in the world, has won over the House of Saud, which is granting the group the first license to operate movie theatres in Saudi Arabia.

Three more screens will be added by mid-year. The Public Investment Fund is poised to take a US$400 million stake in the Hollywood talent agency Endeavor as part of plans to diversify the kingdom's oil-based economy.

Global theatre chains have long eyed the kingdom as the Middle East's last untapped mass market of more than 30 million people, the majority of whom are under 25.

Besides cinema openings, Cirque du Soleil will come to Riyadh this year and the city of Jeddah hosted the kingdom's first-ever Comi-Con in February, he said.
