Fired-up hosts Australia look to dominate Commonwealth Games

Australia set a new world record as they secured gold ahead of England in the Commonwealth Games men's 4,000m cycling team pursuit. Sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack clocked a time of 3 minutes, 30.5 seconds at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

The Campbell sisters underpinned the fresh record of three minutes 30.05 seconds with powerful legs as Australia beat Canada (silver) and England (bronze).

Bronte Campbell had given the host nation the lead on the second leg before McKeon handed over to Cate Campbell, who produced a storming finish to break the previous mark.

Canada finished second, almost four seconds behind.

Roared on by a capacity crowd at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane, the Australians romped home against England in the men's 4,000m team pursuit final in a record-breaking 3mins 49.804sec, beating the 3:50.265 set by Britain at Rio.

The triumph follows his Olympic gold in the same event at the Rio Games two years ago. "I don't think I've quite come down yet".

Australia won eight of nine golds in the men's 400m freestyle from 1970 to 2002 - but lost out to Scotland's David Carry in 2006 and Canada's Ryan Cochrane in 2010 and 2014. "It was a good race with James - he's always out quick", Horton said. I probably feel more emotion here than in Rio (2016 Olympic Games) because the whole crowd is cheering for you.

"I obviously wanted to win the gold but Taylor was just better than me tonight, I accept that because it was an incredible swim from her", Titmus said. "That didn't happen so much in Rio".

Under a mostly clear night sky at the open-air stadium, Ruck held off a fast-charging Ariarne Titmus of Australia in the 200-meter freestyle. I was still a bit soft and slow in that first 200.

England also claimed two gold medals on the opening night with Aimee Wilmott denying Hannah Miley's bid for a Scottish record three consecutive 400m individual medley gold medals and James Wilby dethroning Scottish defending champion Ross Murdoch in the 200m breaststroke.
