Kyrie Irving joins Gordon Hayward and Daniel Theis as players who will miss the playoffs

Tatum who is the lone star in Boston with Kyrie Irving out had a double-double on Tuesday night with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Irving had what the team characterized as a "minimally invasive" procedure on March 24.

The Celtics guard underwent knee surgery last month to remove a tension wire that been placed there during a procedure to fix a fractured patella in 2015.

The Celtics guard is set to undergo a second surgery - his first was on March 24 to remove a tension wire from his knee - this time, to remove two screws that were inserted when he underwent surgery to fix a fractured kneecap during the 2015 NBA Finals and clear the infection surrounding the area. ESPN first reported the development.

Irving will undergo a second surgical procedure on his left knee and is expected to be sidelined four-to-five months, Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reports. But now it is looking like it will take a small miracle for the Celtics to even advance past the first round.

"It's about to be insane, G", said Irving, hinting at the seemingly endless possibilities for the Celtics with these two young and dynamic All-Stars added to the roster.

Even though Boston's starting lineup for the playoffs won't be as intimidating, the team can not be counted out. After all, Irving made the biggest shot in Cleveland history, a go-ahead 3-pointer in the closing minutes of Game 7 in the 2016 Finals.

"There's no scenario Gordon Hayward will play again this year". This season was only a snapshot of what's to come from me. Irving's injury, while unfortunate, has allowed Boston to showcase its role players to potential suitors. The Raptors have to feel as good as ever about their chances, but they've also been playing some shakier basketball of late, going 5-5 over their last ten games, although they've also had no real pressure to go for wins since the first Kyrie news, either.

Boston is also now without guard Marcus Smart, who is expected to return midway through the playoffs.

The Celtics still want to give themselves as many options as possible, and Gibson is one that might be able to bring that spark. But it would be surprising to see him come back.

Regardless of how deep Boston gets in the post-season this year, Danny Ainge's shrewd dealings mean the Celtics can be optimistic about the future. While not entirely unexpected - Irving has missed 18 of the Celtics' 78 matches so far this season - the diagnosis comes as a major blow for Boston, who have been beset by injuries this season. On that call, he repeatedly stressed that Irving, who just turned 26 last month while Isaiah Thomas is nearing 30, "fit [Boston's] timeline".

So, it appears to be another year of coming up a bit short in Beantown.
