An Indian court on Saturday granted bail to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan so he can contest a five-year prison sentence for killing endangered wildlife almost two decades ago.

The poaching incident took place two decades ago near Jodhpur, in the western state of Rajasthan, where the actor was filming a movie, Hum Saath Saath Hain (We Are All Together).

The order was pronounced by Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi, who reserved orders in the plea yesterday.

Bollywood star Salman Khan has been granted bail days after being jailed for five years. The actor's counsel has also admitted a review petition against his five-year sentence.

The original poaching complaint against him was filed by the local Bishnoi community, who revere and worship the blackbuck.

Salman is facing 5 years in jail for killing the endangered species, which is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.

It was claimed that in September 1998, Khan hunted down the animals in the Kankani village of Rajasthan; in October 1998 Khan was arrested in the connection with the poaching of endangered animals, and subsequently granted bail.

His attorney Mahesh Bora has challenged the conviction and sentence, and Salman will remain free pending the outcome of the appeal.

Soli Sorabjee, a legal expert, said it was normal for bail to be granted in such a case, and didn't see Khan getting any special treatment from the court. Reports that the animals died of "overeating" or that they were killed by dogs were also submitted in court to establish his innocence.

Reuters noted that the Indian film industry relies heavily on Khan's popularity for box office receipts. "After working with him so closely I have become a huge fan of him not only as an actor but also as a human being", Remo D'Souza told the Press Trust of India.

Producer of Race 3 Ramesh Taurani said he is "happy" that the actor will come out of jail. Joy in the air Hundreds of Khan's fans gathered in front of his residence in Mumbai.

"The accused is a popular actor whose deeds are followed by people". Several celebrities have poured in their support for Salman Khan.

This was the Salman's fourth time in this prison.
