Steve Spurrier to coach in new spring league

Report: Steve Spurrier signs on as head coach in new spring football league, the Alliance of American Football

Steve Spurrier will coach the Orlando franchise in the new Alliance of American Football which is set to launch in February 2019

When the Alliance of American Football launches in 2019, one of its eight inaugural teams is going to feature one of the most prestigious coaches in college football history in Steve Spurrier, as CBS News reported Saturday. "Orlando has already proven to be a passionate, loyal and engaged fan base that loves the game, yet they don't have a professional football team to call their own", Charlie Ebersol said".

The Alliance of American Football, run by Charlie Ebersol, plans to debut February 9, 2019, the week after Super Bowl LIII. "We're not recruiting ninth- and 10th-graders all year or searching for players". Former NFL executive Bill Polian and such former star players as Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Jared Allen and Justin Tuck will be involved in the league on the administrative level.

According to Ebersol, the other seven teams to play in the AAF (along with their coaches) will be announced in the coming week. To differentiate the Alliance of American Football from its competitors, there will be no TV timeouts and 60 percent fewer commercials. There will also be a 30-second play clock and mandatory two-point conversion attempts after touchdowns.

Spurrier coached collegiately at Duke (1987-89), Florida (1990-2001) and SC (2005-2015).

The league, made up of players who didn't make the cut for the NFL, will have the initial game and the championship game on CBS and one matchup per week on CBS Sports Network. "Those players get a chance to continue playing even if they don't play at the highest level, and then maybe someday they play well enough to go to the highest level". I mean, that's something we want to bring to our league. In 2016, Florida changed the name of their home field to the Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, unofficially known as "The Swamp" - a nickname he's credited as creating. He was 86-49 with the Gamecocks from 2005-2015 and led the team to an SEC East title and three consecutive 11-win seasons. Starting on April 17, fans will be able to put down season-ticket deposits on the league's website.
