NY Trump Tower Fire On 50th Floor Out, One Injured – President Safe In DC

The 67-year-old man who was killed in a blaze at New York City's Trump Tower was an art collector who spent time with Andy Warhol but later fell on harder financial times.

"Units made their way up to the 50th floor", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

In all, six firefighters - of the roughly 200 or so who had responded - suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze, Nigro said.

The president took to Twitter Saturday evening, saying; "Fire at Trump Tower is out".

The New York Times reported that resident Dennis Shields only knew to leave the building because he received a text from Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, who Shields says he grew up with Cohen.

According to a 1999 New York Post report, Trump was the most prominent member of a powerful real estate lobby opposed to reform, and complained he couldn't afford to install sprinklers.

After two deadly fires in 1998, NYC legislation was proposed to require sprinklers in all residential buildings.

Four fire fighters were injured in the incident.

The legislation was stimulated on by a significant fire in a so-called "fire-resistant" home block without any sprinklers on NY city's Upper West Side the previous December, and another in a Brooklyn housing project the very same month where corridor sprinklers stopped working. "The apartment is quite large". The White House said Saturday that the first family was not in NY when the fire broke out. Eric Trump stated the fire had actually remained in a cooling tower.

The cause of Saturday's fire is still unknown, according to CBS, as is the cause of the man's death, the Daily News reported. The president lives there in the top three floors when he is in NY.

Subsequent updates to the building code required commercial skyscrapers to install the sprinklers retroactively, but owners of older residential highrises are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovations.
