Florida Gov. Rick Scott Announces Senate Run

Assuming he fends off other Republican challengers during an August primary, Scott will take on Nelson, who's held the seat since 2000. "We're not going to see a change in Washington if we don't have term limits on Congress". "There's a lot of old exhausted thinking up there". That members of the United States Senate do not have term limits has been a point of contention before, and those who want change across the board in D.C. have suggested that imposing such limits will decrease worries about "politics as usual".

Scott made his announcement in a small warehouse and loading area at ODC Construction, a company with 400 employees that Scott has touted as an example of how his policies have led to job growth. I mean the U.S. Senate is a place where you have to work well with people or you can't get anything done. "He came to a business site, speaking to a small crowd in a warehouse".

Some predict Scott, a multimillionaire who has self-funded past campaigns, will amass upwards of $100 million for his Senate bid, forcing Democrats to spend generous sums in Florida's 10 media markets. His fundraising prowess, along with his personal wealth _ if he needs to use it _ sets up Nelson with a fierce challenge for re-election.

But Nelson, 75, seemed unfazed by Scott's candidacy.

"I've always run every race like there's no tomorrow - regardless of my opponent", Nelson said in the statement. Asked in an exclusive interview Sunday with Politico on whether he considers himself a "Donald Trump Republican", Scott replied: "I consider myself Rick Scott".

Rick Scott gives a speech in July 2014. This has become an effective strategy for Republicans, most notably in the 2016 Presidential Election. In the past, the National Rifle Association has praised the governor's record on gun laws.

Scott has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) but following the fatal shooting of seventeen people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on February 14 Scott supported legislation that raises the age eligibility for handgun purchases from 18 to 21, bans bump stocks, and allows law enforcement to confiscate weapons from people who are considered risky.

Trump, in other words, could be a liability in Florida more than in other states - and perhaps for no candidate as much as Scott.

Attack ads began hitting the internet as soon as Scott made his announcement.

The video points out that Scott was forced to step down from Columbia/HCA while the federal government was investigating a federal fraud case against the company which resulted in what was a then-record $1.7 billion fine for Medicare fraud.

Republicans responded with a website, nomorenelson.org, paid for by the Republican Party of Florida, casting Nelson as a do-nothing career politician.

Scott echoed some of those criticisms, although he did not mention Nelson by name.

"We can change Washington". "Let's stop sending talkers to Washington; let's send some doers to Washington".

In formally announcing his campaign on Monday, Scott was expected to criticize "career politicians" and call for term limits for members of Congress.

"People are flocking to Florida because this is where you can live the dream of this country", he said.

"She was wonderful. She worked her tail off".
