Buckel is also credited by colleagues as a leader in the legal battle for marriage equality - he was a senior attorney at Lambda Legal's Marriage Project.

'A lifetime of service may best be preserved by giving a life...

Susan Sommer, a former attorney for Lambda Legal and now the general counsel for the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, also reacted to Buckel's death.

He left a note in a shopping cart nearby and had sent the same note by email to several media outlets, including the Times.

He headed up Lambda Legal's defense team that secured justice from the state of Nebraska for the rape and murder of transgender man Brandon Teena in 1993.

The remains of 60-year-old David Buckel were found by passers-by in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

The case attracted quite a lot of publicity and was even adapted into a movie, concentrating on Teena's life named "Boys Don't Cry", which won actress Hillary Swank an Academy Award.

In the note, Buckel referenced the Tibetan monk protesters who set themselves on fire in protest the Chinese occupation in Tibet, arguably an image that has captured resistance and protests more powerfully than any other.

Told Irena Ryjova, 44 who came past the 'mass" just after 7 am, an hour after Buckel burned himself, "It was just lying there, on its back, knees slightly bent like someone would lie on the sand at the beach'.

Buckel was found when firefighters responded to reports of a fire in Prospect Park, the police spokesperson said.

Some of his other more prolific cases include arguing against the Boys Scouts of America's ban on homosexual members, fighting for the creation of an LGBTQ club at a high school in Utah and helping a Pennsylvania woman win a lawsuit over being allowed to put "beloved life partner" as an epitaph over her deceased partner.

The case, known as Nabozny v. Podlesny, ultimately ruled in 1996 that schools have a responsibility to protect students from anti-gay abuse.

'The thoroughness, the detail and the careful reasoning in the opinion means that other courts around the nation will be paying attention, ' he said.

Adding, 'He was a very smart and methodical lawyer.

"This is a tremendous loss for our Lambda Legal family, but also for the entire movement for social justice".

Adding, 'Our hearts go out to all who knew him.

"His thoughtful and engaging advocacy broke through many stubborn misconceptions and showed it was possible and necessary for our movement to speak up for bullied, ostracised LGBT young people", she said in a statement to the Huffington Post.
