McGrath did not elaborate as to the nature of Bush's health problems.

Bush has been in and out of hospital recently and is now in "failing health", according to a family spokesman. Bush, 92, will focus on "comfort care" as she decided not to seek additional treatment.

Chelsea Clinton, whose father Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election, tweeted that she was "k$3 eeping Barbara Bush and her family in my heart and prayers".

The former Barbara Pierce married George Herbert Walker Bush in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II when she was twenty years old.

The wife of the 41st US president and the mother of the 43rd, Bush is only the 2nd woman in American history to hold the distinction of being a First Lady and First Mother. He is 93 years old and also has been in failing health in recent years. The other first lady was Abigail Adams. And of her president son, she once said, "I may be the only mother in America who knows exactly what their child is up to all the time". Bush had been hospitalized for bronchitis treatment in January 2017. Months earlier, he was a Houston's Methodist Hospital for 16 days, also for pneumonia. He also served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice president.

ET obtained a statement from the Bush family on Sunday, which was later also posted on Twitter, after she had been hospitalized several times in recent months.

"I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe", she told the magazine.

They traveled to Texas where the oil business dominated, first in Midland-Odessa, later to the Houston area where George found his love for politics.
