Congress will always uphold aspirations, sentiments of masses: Bhalla

Rahul Gandhi had announced the midnight protest in a tweet on Wednesday, and although he had termed it a "silent" peaceful vigil, anti-BJP slogans could be heard by the protesters.

Following Gandhi's protest, some PCC units too staged protests on Friday. Agarwal, however, did not explain as to why Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a self-proclaimed champion of women's rights, has been silent on the issue.

Opposition's candle march was to show the outrage against the recent rape incidents happened in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh and Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The government is sleeping and so at this time, Congress will have to wake them up". Addressing a press conference here, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said the party's ministers in Jammu and Kashmir, who had slammed the police over its action against the rape accused, had been misled. The issue concerns women and here we are joined by several parties and women.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi led a midnight candlelight march on Thursday in protest against crimes committed against women and girls in India.

The Minister said that law agencies and government were "taking necessary action" in the rape incidents.

"We passed a resolution in the State executive meeting of the BJP last week itself that we want the culprits to be punished, justice to be done to the girl, and innocents not to be harassed", Mr. Madhav said.

"It is a protest to ensure that a government blinded by political power does something about the situation", he said.

He said Modi's silence over the rising atrocities against women was "unacceptable" and that India was waiting for him to speak up.
