The Queen's corgis are dead

19 April 2018, 01:57 | Mandy Simon

The Queen left devastated by the death of her last corgi, Willow, aged 14

The Daily Mail reports that the dog was put down following a "cancer-related illness".

It is thought that Willow has been buried in the grounds of the castle, and a headstone will be erected to mark the spot, along with Willow's name and the words "a faithful companion of the Queen".

It is the first time the Queen has not owned a corgi since the end of the second world war.

Queen Elizabeth II's last remaining corgi has died, it has been reported.

Willow was the 14th generation descended from Susan, a gift to the then Princess Elizabeth on her 18th birthday in 1944.

Everybody knows that the Queen loves animals, but none of her four-legged friends are more famous than her corgi's. She also adopted a corgi named Whisper past year after his owner, a former Sandringham gamekeeper, passed away. Her father King George VI first brought a corgi, Dookie, into the Royal Family in 1933.

An insider told the publication the Queen is especially heart broken over the death of Willow.

Roberts encouraged Queen Elizabeth to continue breeding corgis, but, in her old age, she didn't want to leave "any young dog behind".

The 91-year-old made the heartbreaking decision to have Willow put down on Sunday afternoon after her condition worsened. She still owns two other dorgi dogs, Vulcan and Candy, a cross between a corgi and a dachshund, the Daily Mail said.

Willow and the Queen's late corgi Holly, who died at Balmoral aged 13, previously appeared in a London Olympics James Bond sketch with Daniel Craig back in 2012. Willow and a corgi named Holly were the last of the royal breed to survive.

Though the Queen had to say goodbye to her long line of royal corgis, she's not done with being a dog mom just yet.

For more than 70 years, the monarch had rarely gone far without a passel of the dogs at her heels.
