The Top Democrat In The Senate Now Supports Decriminalizing Marijuana
Charles Schumer announced on Friday that he will formally announce a plan to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.
In 2015, almost two decades after California became the first state to legalize medical use of cannabis, Schumer backed the CARERS Act, which would eliminate federal penalties for conduct that complies with state medical marijuana laws. Schumer plans to release the legislation, which would remove marijuana from the Drug Enforcement Administration's list of controlled substances, on Friday, April 20, also known as 4/20, the plant's unofficial holiday.
Sen. Chuck Schumer on state marijuana legalization: "The experiment has been a success".
Much like my own personal views on this issue have evolved, it is clear that the American people no longer view marijuana with as much skepticism as they once did. Besides claiming that "reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men" he also asserted that "most" marijuana smokers in the USA were "Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos", and entertainers. Boehner had once said he was "unalterably opposed" to decriminalizing marijuana because it would lead to more people abusing it, alcohol and other drugs.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of NY in a statement called the move "simply the right thing to do".
Just this year, California voted for the legalization of recreational marijuana.
There's already a marijuana bill in the Senate: Sen.
According to Pew Research, almost 7 in 10 Democrats say marijuana use should be legal as do 65% of independents. Hundreds of NCIA members will descend on Washington, D.C. May 21-23 for NCIA's to educate lawmakers on the social and economic benefits of regulating cannabis and to share the challenges they face due to the conflict between state and federal laws.
Schumer's new position, first reported by VICE News, comes as Democrats have high hopes to re-take the House and Senate in the November 2018 midterm elections.
"The time for decriminalisation has come, and I hope we can move the ball forward on this", Schumer said. Democratic politicians like Schumer have always been lagging indicators of public opinion on this issue, especially compared to rank-and-file members of their own party.
Now, I recognize that time after time when these sweeping changes occur, the little guys lose while the big guys continue to profit.
