Mitt Romney will face primary after setback in run for US Senate

Mitt Romney Confronts Senate Run off in Utah

"I will make that decision down the road", Romney, who is running for US Senate, said in an interview with CNN as he waited for his turn to speak at the Utah GOP convention where he was vying for his party's nomination.

And while a Romney win is still likely, the candidate will have another hurdle to jump through before the election.

Gathering signatures is unpopular among many conservative delegates in the state who say it dilutes their ability to choose a candidate.

Mr. Romney had previously secured his spot on the ballot by collecting 28,000 voter signatures, but he said on Saturday that the choice was partly to blame for his loss. As the Salt Lake Tribune reports, for the past few years Utah conservatives have been fighting to overturn the law that allows signature gathering, since it weakens the power of the state convention. "I'm glad I did it that way".

In order to secure the nomination, a candidate needed to achieve 60% of the vote at Utah's state Republican convention.

The results are a setback for Romney's attempts at a political comeback and serve as a reminder of his 2012 comment that "this ain't bean bag" - a phrase dating back to the turn of the 20th century which suggests politics is a game meant only for tough men.

"Romney, 71, went up against 11 other candidates at the convention, including one dressed as Abraham Lincoln, complete with vest and bow tie". Since then, Trump and Romney appear to have patched up their relationship.

State Rep. Mike Kennedy won 50.88 per cent. (Aside from having far less name recognition, Kennedy has $257,000 on hand to Romney's $1.1 million.) Kennedy made a David and Goliath comparison, telling delegates he's their "stone, ready to be flung at the foes of liberty who seek to oppress us".

President Trump endorses Mitt Romney for his Senate bid in Utah. "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C. If you want things to change, you need to vote for change".

Romney offered a characteristically awkward retort, correcting Kennedy on his biblical metaphor and claiming he's the one who'll take on the status quo in D.C. And secondly, I'm not Goliath.

This primary battle might be a long two months.
