How did the summit come about?
The reasons are ostensibly diplomatic, pointing to a thaw in relations between Kim Jong-un's regime and South Korea and the West, but some noted that Pyongyang might have also been anxious that the mountain was at risk of collapsing, as it visibly shifted during the last nuclear test.
The independent centrist president, who does not always receive such a robust welcome at home, was greeted with repeated standing ovations from members of Congress - including Republicans, who have not always aligned with French leaders on policy. Mr. Moon, who took over as President of South Korea last May, has been a proponent of engagement between the Koreas, a cause he has pushed.
Pope Francis called on his followers to pray for North and South Korea on Wednesday and said the upcoming inter-Korea summit is a good opportunity for reconciliation and the restoration of brotherly love.

In other words, the root of the tensions between the two Korean nations-like the Korean War or the North Korean nuclear problem today-actually lies not on the uneasy relations between North and South Korea, but mostly on the power games played by these major powers. Mr. Trump, whilst praising Mr. Kim, has said that sanctions will remain in place until a deal is reached.

SCMP also reported that following the blast, North Korea's top geologist, Lee Doh-sik visited Beijing's Institute of Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and met with senior geology experts there.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the Pyongyang Railway Station to see off a special objective train carrying the bodies of Chinese victims who were killed or wounded in a traffic accident, in this undated photo released on April 26, 2018 by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). His manoeuvres could be a clever strategy to engage with all stakeholders, some of whom, like the US and China, have competing interests in the region.
The U.S.is pressing North Korea for full denuclearization prior to removing sanctions implemented in the country as part of the administration's maximum pressure campaign. North Korea will likely insist that substantial economic benefits be upfront.
