'Major Development' in Golden State Killer Case, Authorities Say

Patton Oswalt Late Wife's Book Helps Nab 'Golden State Killer' Suspect

She wrote the book on the Golden State Killer and died before a suspect was arrested | The Sacramento Bee

The Golden State Killer terrorized Northern California from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s, and is alleged to have carried out at least 12 homicides and 45 rapes.

McNamara never lived to finish the book, I'll Be Gone In the Dark, or get it published after she suddenly died in 2016.

The book - I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer - was completed posthumously and published in February, becoming a bestseller. But on Wednesday, I'll Be Gone In the Dark shot up to the top of Amazon's best-seller list and overnight, the online retailer was sold out of all of its copies.

Because the crimes spanned 10 counties the culprit was later dubbed the Golden State Killer.

On Wednesday, California police said they had arrested a 72-year-old former police officer, Joseph James DeAngelo, in connection with the case.

'Her book and the article that led to the book really amped up of the interest in the case, and really put a lot of focus on this, not to discredit the work that the police and the lab technicians did, but it is this - it was like, it was her dream, ' Oswalt told Meyers.

At the end of his thread of tweets about the twist in the final story McNamara documented, Oswalt wrote sweet words to his new wife.

In a freaky coincidence, Mr. Haynes, Mr. Jensen and Mr. Oswalt were all together at the book event in Chicago on Tuesday, and members of Ms. McNamara's family were in the audience.

"The resulting book is a chilling and vivid narrative of a serial killer's crimes, and a revealing account of Ms. McNamara's obsession with the case and the psychological toll it took on her", the Times said. "I just feel very, very happy that her work wasn't in vain".

Oswalt also pushed back on Twitter against law enforcement statements that McNamara's work played no role in helping in the arrest of the suspect in the decades-old case, adding that it even was his wife who coined the phrase "Golden State Killer", The Hollywood Reporter reported. Instead, they credited her for have helping keep public interest and "tips coming in".

Patton Oswalt tweeted "Goodnight, Michelle".

In one twist, McNamara, a true-crime writer and then wife of actor Patton Oswalt, who died in her sleep at age 46, passed away two years ago this week and would have celebrated her 48th birthday two weeks ago.

"On the night when all of Michelle's collaborators were together for the first time, in Michelle's hometown, with Michelle's family present, the monster we sought is simultaneously taken into custody", Haynes, the book researcher, wrote.

"One day soon, you'll hear a auto pull up to your curb, and engine cut out". "You'll hear footsteps coming up your front walk". Like they did for Edward Wayne Edwards, twenty-nine years after he killed Timothy Hack and Kelly Drew, in Sullivan, Wisconsin. Like they did for Kenneth Lee Hicks, 30 years after he killed Lori Billingsley, in Aloha, Oregon. "The doorbell rings. No side gates are left open". Clench your teeth. Inch timidly toward the insistent bell. "But that certainly held the door open for the other causes".

"This is how it ends for you".
