Lawyer at Trump Tower meeting reportedly worked with Russian government

"I am a lawyer, and I am an informant", she said, according to The Times.

The previously undisclosed details about Ms. Veselnitskaya rekindle questions about who she was representing when she met with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, and others at Trump Tower in Manhattan during the campaign.

But emails obtained by a former oil tycoon and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin show Veselnitskaya worked closely with Chaika's office to help defend a real estate firm owned by a Russian businessman against Justice Department civil fraud charges, even though she said she was acting independently as an attorney on behalf of the firm, Prevezon Holdings.

All these circumstances and denials cast Veselnitskaya as a woman willing to help her country in any way, even if it is to the detriment of the USA government.

The screening, at Washington's Newseum, happened on June 13, 2016, four days after Veselnitskaya attended a meeting at Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other officials from Trump's election campaign.

"Since 2013, I have been actively communicating with the office of the Russian prosecutor-general", Veselnitskaya was quoted as saying.

In the interview, Veselnitskaya confirmed the emails were written by her, the Times reported, saying "many things included here are from my documents, my personal documents".

Natalia Veselnitskaya speaks to journalists in Moscow, Russia on July 11, 2017.

This contradicts her earlier contention that she had no connections with the Russian government.

"I shared information with" Chaika, she told the newspaper, in the course of her investigation into a hedge-fund manager who was a driving force behind the Magnitsky Act, a USA sanctions law that locked certain Russians out of their overseas funds, among other punishments.

Goldstone told Donald Trump Jr. that "the crown prosecutor of Russia" was offering "to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father". The meeting, one focus of the special counsel investigation into Russia's election interference, was organized after an intermediary promised that Ms. Veselnitskaya would deliver documents that would incriminate Mrs. Clinton.

"I am a lawyer, and I am an informant", she said.

The email was sent by former campaign surrogate and British tabloid journalist Rob Goldstone, explaining the use of the English term for a prosecutor general.

The Times said that the Russian prosecutor general's office did not respond to requests for comment and that Veselnitskaya said she would respond in two weeks.
