Facebook has begun rolling out a "Sleep Mode" feature to Messenger Kids, offering parents greater control over their children's social media use. The company has recently announced that they will be introducing more parental controls to YouTube Kids where it will give parents more control over the content that their kids can and cannot view. Parents will also be able to restrict viewing by channels they approve themselves.
Messenger Kids, which was introduced in December, is a standalone app separate from Facebook's main social network and the regular version of Facebook Messenger. There are three new features that are being rolled out to the YouTube Kids app along with the web portal.
Since the app was released parents have blocked and flagged thousands of videos for being "fake" copies of their kids' favorite cartoon characters. In January, a group of 20 organizations including the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, ACLU and Parents Across America signed an open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg calling the app "irresponsible" and urging him to discontinue it.
Stay tuned with us to know more of such beneficial innovations of Facebook and other tech leaders of the industry. The app is there to make the kids more productive and this is how they can improve and build up good idea within their minds.
Beginning this week, parents will be able to select "trusted channels" and topics that their children can access on the app, like "Sesame Workshop" or "learning", that have been curated by people at YouTube Kids and its partners. Go to the Facebook app and tap on to the Child's app from the profile section. But some child development experts have called for Facebook to pull it, saying it should not be making apps for kids. You will be allowed to create different settings for weekdays and weekends.
"For those parents who want even more control over the videos and channels in the YouTube Kids app, a special feature later this year will roll-out, that will allow parents to specifically handpick every video and channel available to their child in the app", YouTube Kids said.
Moreover, the child will get a warning 10 minutes before the "sleep mode" activates so that he/she can finish and wind up any ongoing conversations on the app.
