BBCWindrush scandal Andrew Neil demanded to know how Amber Rudd has handed the Windrush crisis

The Home Secretary said she never agreed to use removal targets for migrants, adding that those used by her department "were not published targets against which performance was assessed". May - under whose Home Office tenure the "hostile environment" policy was introduced - over the Windrush row.

In January, India's Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, signed an agreement with Britain on the swift return of Indian illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom, an issue that has been repeatedly raised by British government officials to their Indian counterparts.

Rudd had claimed to a parliamentary committee that her department did not impose targets, but the Guardian reported on Sunday that in a private letter to May in 2017, she had informed the Prime Minister that she meant to boost deportations by 10%.

'When I was home secretary we did have targets, targets for ensuring we were dealing with illegal immigrants, ' she said. "So it's about a compliant environment", Mr Javid said.

Amber Rudd dramatically resigned from the government last night after admitting she "inadvertently misled" MPs when she told them targets did not exist.

In a series of tweets, Lammy said: " I have written to the PM supported by 200 MPs demanding that the promises made by the Govnt following the Windrush crisis are written into law.

But in recent years, successive British governments have sought to appear tough on illegal immigration, and their descendants are now struggling to prove a citizenship status they previously took for granted.

Only last week she had denied any knowledge of such targets, but correspondence published by the Guardian on Sunday showed Rudd had told Downing Street past year of an "ambitious but deliverable" target for an increase in deportations.

Rudd's department had been targeting legal immigrants, mainly from the Caribbean, who were invited to the United Kingdom in the decades following World War II.

While aimed at ending the scandal, Javid's appointment could also change the balance of May's top team in negotiating Britain's departure from the European Union in March 2019.

Rudd's dramatic exit comes as a severe setback for May, who publicly declared her "full confidence" in Rudd as recently as Friday and faces potentially bruising local authority elections across metropolitan England on Thursday.

The SNP's home affairs spokeswoman Joanna Cherry said: "It is the prime minister who has created the fundamental reasons for the Windrush scandal".

After repeated challenges to her testimony on the deportation of immigrants, Rudd telephoned May on Sunday and offered her resignation which was accepted, the source said.

A South Asian will head Britain's Home Office for the first time as the government sought to contain an escalating crisis over its treatment of Commonwealth citizens and its tough immigration regime more widely.

Opponents say the government should drop that target in the wake of the Windrush debacle.

This is what shoppers in Chatham said when asked if she was right to resign.

The scandal has also raised eyebrows across the English Channel, with European Union officials anxious about the post-Brexit immigration status of the 3 million E.U. citizens who now live in Britain.

James Brokenshire has become the new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, replacing Javid. Actually, they were always British.
