Adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump in USA federal court Monday afternoon claiming he made a defamatory statement when commenting on her description of a man she alleged threatened her in 2011.

The lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan escalates Daniels' litigation with Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, who paid her $US130,000 before the 2016 United States presidential election not to talk about the alleged sexual encounter a decade earlier.

Cohen said he paid the porn star $130,000, shortly before the 2016 election, to keep her mouth shut about any fling with candidate Trump. "A total con job, playing the Fake News Media for Fools (but they know it)!"

In the lawsuit, Daniels - whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford - says the tweet in effect accuses her of committing a crime because he claims she has falsely accused a person of committing a crime against her.

"Mr. Trump's statement falsely attacks the veracity of Ms. Clifford's account of the threatening incident that took place in 2011". The White House has denied her allegations.

Ms Daniels says she and the president had an affair, starting in 2006.

Daniels and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, released a composite sketch of the man two weeks ago, drawing scorn from Trump on Twitter.

"A sketch years later about a nonexistent man", Trump wrote.

"Mr. Trump's statement is false and defamatory", according to the lawsuit.

Avenatti replied by mocking Trump and raising the defamation issue.

Daniels, through her attorney, Michael Avenatti, claims that that particular tweet amounts to an act of defamation.

Cohen has dominated national headlines since federal agents stormed into his Manhattan office and hotel room earlier this month and seized a cache of records, including communications between him and Trump.

The new suit, filed Monday in the Southern District of NY, claims an April tweet from Trump is "false and defamatory". Sources told ABC News that the Trump campaign payments, which were made between October 2017 and January 2018, were not related to the Daniels case.
