Capitals even series at 1 after 4-1 win in Game Two

After allowing three different two-goal leads to disappear on home ice this postseason, the Washington Capitals were able to hold on to one on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 4-1 win to tie their second-round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins at one game apiece.

For that, the Capitals can thank a dearth of available camera angles, yes, but also a group-wide resiliency that helped them rebound from a demoralizing Game 1 loss in which they bumbled away a two-goal lead for the third time this postseason.

Prior to the 2018 series, Ovechkin had scored 21.8 percent of the Capitals' goals in the three series against the Penguins and had a point on 47.3 percent of every Washington goal when the two teams met in the post-season. The Capitals took game two by a score of 4-1 to even the series at 1-1.

In Game 1, the Capitals got an early 1-0 lead under 20 seconds into the game.

NOTES: The Capitals have now killed 22 consecutive penalties dating to Game 2 of their first-round series against Columbus. Connolly shot to Murray's left and the puck ricocheted into the net 2:08 into the second frame. "We're going to let the league do their job, and we're going to do ours".

That would not be the only review in the game. Common sense led many to believe that the puck was likely shoved past the goal line, but Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made it hard to get a clear look. "I don't know what angles they have, but the one I saw made it pretty clear that it had to be a goal". "When you blow it up, you can see the white. They're going to be big games for us".

Then there was Tom Wilson! That will make Wilson eligible for Game 3 on Tuesday night, but Dumoulin's status remains uncertain.

There was no penalty called on the play but it will nearly certainly be reviewed by the NHL's Department of Player Safety. "It felt that contact with the head was unavoidable on the play, and Dumoulin bracing himself for the [Alex] Ovechkin hit materially changed the position of his head prior to Wilson making contact with him". Two of those players-future Hall-of-Fame center Evgeni Malkin and speedster winger Carl Hagelin-missed Games 1 and 2, so unsafe reinforcements could arrive soon enough.

Malkin was Pittsburgh's leading scorer this season with 42 goals and 56 assists in 78 games, and Washington got another opportunity when Malkin's undisclosed lower-body injury kept him out of Game 2, too. It's always exciting when those two teams play. That is a major dent in their forward depth.

"You can see what happen last game when we get the lead 2-0, and they come back and win the game", captain Alex Ovechkin said. "I don't think we played our best game". Nicklas Backstrom scored the empty-net goal, while Kris Letang scored the only goal for the Penguins.
