Facebook Announces Expansion of AR Across its Apps at F8 2018

Facebook is Finally Gonna Redesign Messenger

We're excited to see how this enhances connections between people and the brands they love, while delivering business outcomes at scale.

Facebook Messenger announced that starting today, its intelligent assistant M will be able to interpret words in bilingual conversations.

Translations by M Suggestions is powered by the same neural network-powered translation engine Facebook uses to translate Facebook and Instagram posts and comments.

M Suggestions now operate in 11 countries and are available in English, German, Spanish, French, and Thai. This feature - launching in closed beta - leverages the nature of messaging to help people get valuable, instant feedback about purchases, customizations, and more, without ever needing to set foot in a store. ASUS, for example, will give you an unboxing experience where you get a closer look at their phones before purchasing, and Sephora will let you try on their make-up with a filter. Messenger is gaining momentum at scale as we continue to invest in new platform features and improve existing ones thanks to the feedback from our community. On the back end, Facebook has been growing its data center footprint and building the infrastructure it needs to accommodate more immersive content, such as live video, 360 photos and AR and VR.

Here's what you need to know about the new features in Facebook Messenger. Facebook partnered up with Sketchfab, which provides a library of models you can download and use in your own projects.

Facebook also announced that it is updating its AR creation software AR Studio.

The filter platform will operate a little differently on Instagram where people will be exposed to user-designed filters based on the accounts that they follow. It also includes semantic scene understanding to create experiences that are contextually aware, such as adding heat waves to the top of a real-world coffee cup.
