Deputy leader ousted as Labour and Liberals make gains

The primary battleground is London- where Labour has been hoping to ride a wave of Remainer anger to seize Tory strongholds like Wandsworth Westminster and Barnet

However, the Conservatives ended up with three fewer wards after losing three to Labour, one to the Liberal Democrats and gaining one vacant ward. They have won it for me.

This is because in local elections in Britain, the party that's in national government usually loses seats as voters views at an opportunity to kick the party in national power. "We will continue to work hard for local people and we will build on this success for the future".

This year's election saw 13 Worthing Borough Council wards head to the polls with the Tories defending ten seats and the Liberal Democrats, UKIP and Greens each defending one.

Mr Corbyn's party lost Nuneaton and Bedworth - an area that often indicates the colour of the government at general elections - as well as Derby and fell short of gaining control in areas like Swindon, Dudley and Walsall, where they had hoped to establish middle England strongholds.

She told cheering activists that the opposition "threw everything" at "one of their top targets" but failed, adding: "We've seen other success in London".

At one point earlier it looked as though Labour had done significantly less well than expected and it would have been an huge shock if the Conservatives had taken control, but it later evened out.

Speaking after the result, Anstee said: "Clearly elements of the result are particularly disappointing, we saw a number of seats change that we would have rather have not changed hands".

After the Conservatives won control of Barnet council in the local elections yesterday, young defeated Jewish Labour councillor Adam Langleben speaks of how anti-semitism in the Labour Party has affected the Jewish community in Barnet.

Mr Corbyn has endured fierce criticism over the handling of anti-Semitism within his party.

Former leader of the council Labour councillor Bill Hartnett said he was disappointed with the result.

The Tories also lost Trafford, their flagship council in the North West, to no overall control, with Labour now the largest party.

Cllr Quinn said: "I am very pleased and I am honoured that the people of Sedgley have put their trust in me for the third time".

Many within the party also pointed out that by its calculations, close results in four wards meant they missed out on victory in Wandsworth by just 141 votes.

"It comes along and it causes disruption and then it goes dormant, and that's exactly what we are going to do", he told BBC radio.

"It's a slap in the face to my Jewish constituents and the Labour Party need to do more and they need to do it quicker".

Liberal Democrat MP Sir Edward Davey described the party's advances in areas like Richmond as "a sign of things to come".

Leader Sir Vince Cable said the results were "very positive" and demonstrated the Lib Dems were "very much on the way back".
