Peterson's two eagles carry him to lead at Quail Hollow

Woods shows no sign of rustiness as Wells Fargo Championship beckons

He had only seven birdie opportunities inside 20 feet, even though he kept the ball in play for the most part.

Tiger Woods' first round since the Masters left him perplexed and questioning his putting.

Following his disappointing tie for 32nd in the Masters, Woods said he put his clubs in the closet for 10 days and got away from the game. My feels just aren't matching up with the speed of these greens. They're on the slower side. Putts I missed yesterday, I was blocking them, trying to hit them the right pace. What I was feeling and sensing just didn't match up. He stretched out both arms in mock celebration after his 2-over 74 that got him just inside the cut line. I just didn't make anything today. "Just a odd combo to have firm but a little bit on the slower side".

Woods three-putted twice for bogey, including the par-3 sixth hole when he had a downhill birdie chance from about 18 feet. Those two (Reed and Koepka) missed it left and that's all I was committed to - understanding that putt wasn't going to break. He didn't birdie any of the par 5s after being in greenside bunkers on two of them and leaving himself a 6-foot birdie putt on the other. Playing his first tournament since switching from Nike irons to TaylorMades, Woods displayed few issues with the transition, hitting 13 of 18 greens in regulation and carving several shots in to hard hole locations.

Woods, healthy again after a spinal fusion more than a year ago, is playing his seventh tournament of the year.

"I just can't believe how long this golf course has become", he said. "More bunkers are in play, they're more hard to carry, and some of the greens have more slope".

Since that time, Quail Hollow underwent alterations in advance of the 2017 PGA Championship, including a different strain of grass on the greens.

On a day when two-times Wells Fargo victor Rory McIlroy started with a smooth three-under-par 68, Peterson made consecutive eagles for a sizzling 65 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

Rory McIlroy, a two-time victor at Wells Fargo, was among 10 players at 68. After finishing his round and speaking to the media, Woods went to a practice green to work on his putting. He tees off in the second round at 7:40 a.m. on Friday.

Woods is making his first appearance in the event since missing the cut in 2012.

Woods is trying to avoid the 18th missed cut of his career on the PGA Tour as a pro (19th worldwide) and a third missed cut at Quail Hollow.
