Elia Viviani, who won the second stage of the race the next day, cycling from Haifa to Tel Aviv in less than four hours, said he was pleasantly surprised by the crowds.

Four-time Tour de France victor Chris Froome, who bloodied his right knee, and ripped his shorts and jersey in a training crash before Friday's opening leg, finished safely in the middle of the peloton.

Viviani was well off the pace with less than two kilometres to go but the Italian powered home to win comfortably ahead of Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia) and Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Saturday's second stage and Sunday's third were both long, hot slogs through the desert that ended in bunch sprints, and Froome was able to stay in the wheels and out of trouble.

Australian Rohan Dennis, of BMC Racing, took the race leader's pink jersey off reigning champion Tom Dumoulin.

"To be honest I always raced without thinking about my competitors", said Viviani, who won a track gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and rides for Quick-Step Floors.

He was 19th, 38 seconds behind the leader.

He'd also won a stage in the Tour Down Under in January and triumphed at Three Days of De Panne in March.

On Wednesday, after a 65km training ride in the morning, we had an afternoon meeting cancelled at the last moment so my team-mates and I took a taxi into the old town for a wander around and, apart from the beauty of the area, the first thing we noticed was the amount of armed police everywhere.

"And how they're going to get you to travel after that period in that country outside of Europe as well is big factor".

Having led much of Saturday's stage, Israel Cycling Academy's Guillaume Boivin once again hit the front of the race early on, narrowly missing out on the King of the Mountains blue jersey. Since 2006, the Giro has commenced alternate years with a "Big-Start" competition outside of Italy. "This was a Giro d'Israel - a three-day tour around our special country".
