Man Wielding Knife Kills 1 and Wounds 4 in Terrorist Attack in Paris

Paris knife attack: Man shot dead by police after killing one, injuring four people

The assailant was killed by police after fatally stabbing one man and injuring four other people.

Four people were wounded in the attack.

Counterterrorism authorities are leading the investigation of the attack. He cited witnesses as saying the alleged attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar" or "God is greatest" during the attack.

"I was working in the restaurant and suddenly I heard a woman screaming. he came and attacked her", said Jonathan, a witness working nearby who wouldn't provide his last name.

Macron said: "France is once again paying the price of blood, but will not cede an inch to enemies of freedom".

One person died, two people suffered minor injuries and two more were seriously wounded before the assailant was shot and killed by the police, local authorities said. Some nine minutes later the assailant was dead, he added.

Many described scenes of panic as Parisians realised a potential terror attack was underway in a city that has been hit by multiple deadly jihadist assaults in recent years.

The formula used was typical of Islamic State claims for attacks inspired by its propaganda, whether or not it had any direct link with the perpetrator. The identity of the attacker man was not yet known, officials said early on Sunday.

"On behalf of all the French, I salute the courage of the police officers who neutralized the terrorist", he said.

The stabbing attack took place at about 21.30 in Paris' second arrondissement where Paris' opera and prestigious residential areas are located.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb called it an "odious" attack.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo also offered her prayers and said she wanted the victims to know "all Parisians are by their side". Several attacks claimed by the Islamic State have broken the calm at home, with the bloodiest one in Paris leaving 130 victims in November 2015. The knife attacker, not identified yet, was shot dead by police. Police indicated that the attacker had been "overcome" and his motives are unknown.
