Two US fighter jets have intercepted two Russian bombers in worldwide airspace off the coast of Alaska.
Russian nuclear forces dispatch two strategic bombers into the air defense zone near Alaska on Friday and the aircraft were intercepted by American F-22 jets, the U.S. Northern Command said.
The us military has revealed some details of the interception of Russian long-range bombers, which were identified by two F-22 fighter jets over the waters of the Bering sea. Andrew Hennessey, a NORAD spokesman, said.
A Russian Defense Ministry statement released Friday diverged from the US military account.
Russian bombers were escorted by two F-22 fighter jets in worldwide airspace for 40 minutes, the RIA Novosti news agency cited the Russian Defense Ministry as saying on May 12. It is also reported that the Russian planes did not cross the air border of the US and Canada, and their flight did not violate global agreements.
Aircraft intercepts, flybys and shadowings have escalated in recent years after Russian military activity and occupation in Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine beginning in 2014.
The U.S. fighter jets did not get closer then 100 meters to the Russian bombers, the Russian military was quoted as saying. The report was only compiled for 2014 and not for the subsequent years.
