Maharashtra: One person dead in Aurangabad violence, prohibitory orders imposed in parts of city
Aurangabad: An uneasy calm prevailed today in this central Maharashtra city where two people were killed in clashes between two groups yesterday. Internet services have been suspended following the violence.
More than 100 shops were gutted & several vehicles were set ablaze after clashes broke out between members of two communities on Friday night in Aurangabad. The violence was allegedly instigated by a city corporator, according to Times of India.
Trouble had begun at around 10 pm on Friday when two groups clashed at Motikaranja locality over an illegal water tap connection.
The situation was controlled after prohibitory orders were imposed as per section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) banning assembly of four or more persons.
The condition of ACP Kolekar, who was admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the stone-pelting, is said to be serious.
According to local sources, tension was brewing in Moti Karanja area for the last few days as the municipal corporation was carrying out a drive against illegal water connections. Ten policemen, including including an assistant commissioner, Govardhan Kolekar, and a couple of police station chiefs, including inspector Hemant Kadam and inspector Shripad Paropkari, were injured in the ensuing violence. "The clashes were engineered by certain anti-social elements and we appeal to residents not to believe in rumours doing the rounds on Whatsapp and other social media", said Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil.
Police said that the situation is under control now. "However, everything is under control now", said the acting Aurangabad Commissioner of Police Milind Bharambe on Saturday. Several police teams have been formed to investigate the incidents that took place in multiple pockets of the city. At present, a large number of security forces are deployed in the city and stress situation remains. The youths from different groups burned some shops and also attacking each other with some pelting stones. Even the clashes soon flared into rioting - lots of shops and vehicles were put on fire and there were still episodes of rock projecting.
