However one of the two players admitted to the hospital has died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Both were taken to hospital, but Mr Howard died on Sunday and after being treated by medics for two days, Mr Baty has now passed away.

Clem Pirates were in Colombo on tour, having arrived last Wednesday, before facing Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club (CR & FC).

A British club rugby player is dead and his team mate is fighting for his life after visiting a nightclub on a tour of Sri Lanka.

The club previously said that in both cases the breathing problems were non-rugby related.

A 26-year-old man, thought to be from Durham, is reported to have died while a 27-year-old man is said to be "critically ill" and is being treated in hospital.

After emergency treatment a player has passed away early morning on Monday (14) while the other player is now under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the private hospital.

Some of the team's players went to a nightclub after playing their first match of the tour and returned to their hotel in the early hours of Sunday, according to local police.

Durham RFC has asked the privacy of the players' families be "respected and upheld at this hard time".

Howard's post-mortem examination on Tuesday did not show any injury or illness to have caused his death.

Mr Baty and Mr Howard complained to the hotel management of breathing difficulties on Sunday morning around 10am.

A Foreign & Commonwealth Office spokesperson told CNN it was "in contact with the Sri Lankan hospital, police and coroner", as well as assisting the families of both men.
