South Africa also recalled its ambassador to Israel, condemning "the indiscriminate and grave manner of the latest Israeli attack".

Israeli troops are prepared for more violent protests, the Israel Defence Forces said in a statement.

This has been the deadliest day of violence between Israeli forces and the Islamic Hamas movement since they fought a war in the summer of 2014.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 1,600 had suffered injuries, and that numerous dead had not yet been identified. It remained unclear Tuesday where and how the child died.

White House spokesman Raj Shah accused Hamas's leaders of making a "gruesome and unfortunate propaganda attempt" that led to the clashes in Gaza at the same time the USA was opening its new embassy in Jerusalem, a move that has fuelled Palestinian anger. "This is what is endangering the people of Gaza".

Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Jerusalem, he said, will always be "the eternal and undivided" capital of Israel.

Hamas denied instigating the violence.

The Palestinian Authority's leader condemned the action as a "massacre" and the United Nations has called it "outrageous human rights violations".

Various countries once had embassies based in Jerusalem but many moved after Israel passed a law in 1980 formally making Jerusalem its capital.

Israeli officials say that Hamas has used the protests to cover terrorist activities and to distract Palestinians from its "failures as a governing body". The military also said it killed three Palestinians who had been trying to plant an explosive along the fence.

Israel says any such return would mean the end of the country as a Jewish state.

Michael Lynk, the United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory, says Israel is guilty of "blatant excessive use of force", in breach of worldwide human rights laws.

The UN Security Council is meeting to discuss the violence, although it is not clear what might come out of the session. Typically, the Rafah crossing is closed for most of the year. "The Palestinian right to peaceful protest is undeniable, but at the same time, we are deeply concerned that peaceful protests in Gaza are being exploited by extremist elements".

On Monday, tens of thousands of Palestinians rallied near Israel's border fence to protest a blockade of their territory and the move of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to al-Quds that day. May 14 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel.

The border marches are seen as Hamas' last hope of ending the blockade, which has made it increasingly hard for the group to govern. Some 1,360 Palestinians were wounded by gunfire, including 130 who were in serious or critical condition, the Gaza Health Ministry told Israeli media.

Over 40,000 Palestinians showed up at the border on Monday, said the Israeli military. Over 100 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded by live fire in the series of weekly protests.

What happened at the Gaza border?

One day later, the first Palestinian funerals have been held and Gaza's medical facilities are stretched to their limit, having coped with 2,771 injuries.

Tuesday's delayed demonstrations could grow since May 15 is the annual observation of Naqba Day, or Catastrophe Day, which mourns Israel gaining statehood and the displacement of the Palestinians. Aircraft and tanks had also targeted military positions belonging to Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip.
