US Hits Iranian Central Bank Governor With Terror Sanctions

BREAKING: US sanctions Iran bank chief as a 'global terrorist' who funnels millions to Hezbollah

In the second move in a week taking aim at the money networks of the Revolutionary Guards or IRGC, the US Treasury also blacklisted a second central bank official, Iraq's Al-Bilad Islamic Bank and its top two executives, and a liaison between IRGC and Hezbollah, which Washington has designated an worldwide terrorist group.

Beginning August 7, the US will impose sanctions on the purchase or acquisition of US dollar banknotes by Iran's government, the US Treasury Department said. Any transactions that contain his signature might doubtlessly run afoul of the sanctions, creating a powerful deterrent to worldwide governments or companies contemplating transactions involving Iran's central financial institution.

Al-Bilad Islamic Financial institution and its CEO and chairman, Aras Habib, had been additionally hit with USA sanctions, as was Muhammad Qasir, who the Treasury mentioned is a Hezbollah official who has been a "important conduit" for transferring funds to Hezbollah from the Revolutionary Guards.

The U.S. said it would also sanction Seif; they are secondary sanctions, which means if someone does business with him, they could be cut off from the U.S. financial system, the Associated Press pointed out.

British, French and German foreign ministers met in Brussels on Tuesday to try to find a way to save the nuclear deal without the United States, but appeared hard-pressed over how their companies could continue doing business with Iran once Washington begins to reimpose sanctions.

"The United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal", Trump said, calling the deal "defective at its core" and a "disastrous deal" that gave the Iranian "regime of great terror" billions of dollars. "The global community must remain vigilant against Iran's deceptive efforts to provide financial support to its terrorist proxies", Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin asserted.

Seif is also under attack inside Iran.

President Trump in April said Iran would pay a "price" if it threatens the U.S.

The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions on Tuesday against Iranian officials at Iran's Central Bank and an Iraqi bank chairman accused of moving millions of dollars to Hezbollah on behalf of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force.

For firms already operating in Iran, there is a period of 3 to 6 months to end the business, otherwise they will be denied access to the U.S. market. In the aftermath of the 2015 deal, in which nuclear sanctions on Iran were lifted, Seif was a prominent voice complaining that Iran was still being kept out of the global financial system and not receiving the economic benefits it was promised in exchange for curtailing its nuclear program. Most recently, the USA has been concerned about the role that Hezbollah fighters are playing in Syria to help prop up President Bashar Assad.
