USA officials cross into North Korea ‘to prepare Trump-Kim talks’

(LEAD) South Korea vows to faithfully implement summit agreement with NK

Trump Summit still on US officials traveled Sunday to North Korea to start preparations

The American team, led by Sung Kim, a former ambassador to South Korea, was due to hold talks with North Korean Vice-Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui on preparations for the summit, USA and South Korean media say.

A statement from North Korea's state news agency KCNA on Sunday also said Kim expressed "his fixed will" on the possibility of meeting Trump as previously planned.

At the White House, Trump said negotiations over a potential June 12 summit with Kim that he had earlier cancelled were "going along very well". Moon said Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was "very regrettable". "And the worst thing about this is not only that the Chinese violated the sanctions by giving all of those luxury items - they photographed it and they were saying, 'look, we're violating sanctions, U.S. Whatcha gonna do about it?'" "I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done", Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House.

The delegation sent to North Korea includes Sung Kim, the US ambassador to the Philippines, CNN reported, "and is a clear sign the summit is back on track".

On Sunday, a White House advance team is scheduled to depart via Japan for a round of planning meetings, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Saturday morning. KCNA said the leaders also agreed to meet frequently.

But Mr Moon suggested Mr Kim was not certain whether Washington could guarantee the stability of his regime.

Kim and Moon held a landmark summit at Panmunjom that saw the two agree in late April to work to remove all nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula and, within the year, pursue talks with the United States to declare an official end to the Korean conflict, which ended in an armistice. I'm not sure if North Korea's going to demand that. "The road to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and peace will never be easy", he said.

The US President said they are still considering 12 June in Singapore for the summit with Kim Jong Un.

"Kim said he'll end the history of war and confrontation and cooperate to bring peace and prosperity through a successful North Korea-U.S. summit".

More significantly, Moon secured the restart of minister-level inter-Korean talks on June 1, followed by a dialogue between military leaders and a Red Cross meeting to reunite families separated by the war. A video released by the South Korean presidential office had the audio replaced with dramatic music, showing the two men embracing, both with wide smiles. He served as ambassador to South Korea from 2011 to 2014, then became special representative for North Korea Policy, a position that Yun later took over and that is now vacant.

Terry pointed to the North Koreans' rare "warm" response to Mr. Trump's cancellation of the summit.

"We're seeing that commitment from North Korea and South Korea".

Earlier this month, North Korea also released three USA citizens―Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-chul―who had been detained in the country on charges of espionage and suspicion of "hostile acts".

She went on to say that the bigger question is whether the two sides will get closer to strike an agreement that both sides will be happy with, "that they just need to finalize and formalize", or that they are being pushed to have the summit just to have the summit.

Saturday's summit marked the fourth meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas since they were divided at the end of the World War II in 1945.
