The storm is moving toward the north near 10 miles per hour with a northward or north-northeastward motion expected today, followed by a turn to the northwest on Sunday.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Cuba's western Pinar del Rio province, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods and mudslides, the National Hurricane Center said.

A flash flood watch has been issued for every coastal county in the Mobile office's jurisdiction - an area that includes Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and stretches from Northwest Florida to MS - beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday and running to 7 p.m. Tuesday. We have a slight risk for gusty wind and the potential for isolated tornadoes. Rainfall totals of between 5 and 10 inches, with up to 15 inches, are possible from eastern Louisiana to Mississippi, Alabama, western Tennessee and the western Florida panhandle, the NWS said.

Local emergency officials continue to monitor flood-prone areas, but so far no issues have been reported.

Storm Alberto has continued roiling toward parts of coastal Mexico and Cuba with rip currents and unsafe surf on Saturday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, warned residents along coastal Alabama and MS as well as the Florida Panhandle to brace for heavy rain and high winds.

Weather authorities say about 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected to drench the area late Sunday night and into Monday, pouring water over already saturated ground.

Gradual strengthening is forecast until the storm reaches the northern Gulf Coast, at which point meteorologists expect it to weaken and become a tropical depression by Monday night or Tuesday, according to the hurricane center. Abundant tropical moisture streaming over the area on the east side of Alberto is expected to produce widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms through the holiday weekend with locally heavy rains and flooding likely. Its top sustained winds were 40 miles per hour.

WIND: Tropical storm conditions will spread northward in the warning area along the west coast of Florida today and will reach the warning area along the northern Gulf Coast by this evening. There were no immediate reports of emergencies.

"Whether you're a resident of this state or just visiting, you need to stay updated on this evolving tropical system", said Gov. Bryant. In contrast to a tropical storm or hurricane, where the strongest winds are at the center, a subtropical storm can have the most powerful winds far from the core.

Flash flooding and even tornadoes are possible due to the storms hitting Florida from Alberto.
