Xiaomi’s new Mi 8 flagship looks identical to the iPhone X
At an event in Shenzhen today, Chinese hardware giant Xiaomi launched its 2018 flagship phone, the Mi 8 - and it's hard to tell it apart from the iPhone X.
Despite not being an expensive tracker, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 looks to have lots of fitness features packed in. However, the new ROM will be highly unstable and it's not advisable to use it on a daily driver smartphone. Honor 10 has an aurora glass design which changes colours from different angles.
Xiaomi showed us a quick demo of this technology during the launch event today in Shenzhen, China, where a auto with completely blacked out windows is driven through a closed path with the driver using nothing, but just Xiaomi's Mi 8 smartphone with dual Global Positioning System receivers to navigate his way, and still manages to make sure the vehicle is within the stipulated bounds. Also, the Xiaomi variant isn't available yet in China or in India, so if you're looking at a purchase right away, the Vivo X21 is your only option. The Xiaomi variant sports of a mammoth 8GB RAM, while Vivo sticks with 6GB. For snapping photos, there are two cameras on the backside, including a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 shooter with an f/1.8 aperture and a 12-megapixel Samsung S5K3m3 telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture. The rear cameras include 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus and dual-LED flash.
The Mi 8 was the crowd puller but the MIUI 10 will probably have the largest impact on Xiaomi users. The smaller phone gets a 20-MP user-facing camera and a 12-MP main camera on the rear that's augmented by depth information from a 5-MP sensor.
It also comes with support for Dolby sound and DTS-HD.
The 3.5 mm audio jack was ditched back in 2017 with the announcement of the predecessor Xiaomi Mi 6, but there is USB-C for all the connections. Furthermore, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition also comes with a transparent back that shows off the innards of the smartphone.
"The most obvious feature of the Mi 8 is the notched 6.21" (15.8 cm) Samsung AMOLED display with a resolution of 2248x1080, which translates into an odd-duck 18.7:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density just over 400 PPI. It also reduces signal delays, making navigation super fast. The Mi 8 "is the first ever smartphone in the world to use pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint technology, meaning it has a dedicated pressure sensor that activates unlocking more quickly". It is also expected to come with IP68 certifications and a bevvy of sensors including altimeter, biometric heart rate monitor, NFC (Near Field Communication), Bluetooth 4.2 and more. Honor however offers an ultrasonic under glass fingerprint sensor which unlocks the device even with wet fingers. Xiaomi says both of these features are firsts for Android handsets, though we've already seen 3D face-mapping technology on the iPhone X. The regular Mi 8 also face unlocking, but it uses a more commonplace IR camera with its own IR illuminator. It is priced at Rs. 35,990 and is exclusive to Flipkart.
Xiaomi wowed its audience yesterday when it introduced the Mi 8Explorer Edition and its see-through back panel.
