Mexico imposes tariffs on $3 billion worth of US exports

07 June 2018, 01:55 | Cedric Leonard

CNN reported the President may have been joking, but the tariffs, justified on national security grounds by the Trump administration, have left Canadians furious.

President Donald Trump accused Canada of burning down the White House during the War of 1812, according to a new report.

Now, to be fair to Trump, the British attack on the White House was in retaliation for our attack on York, Ontario (a British colony at the time), but that's pretty much the only way that Canada is connected to this infamous act.

After Washington slapped 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum from Mexico and Canada, Mexico has retaliated with tariffs on a diverse range of American exports.

According to the Washington Post, the White House is not happy the Trudeau government is placing counter duties on United States imports, and is now considering imposing new financial penalties against Canada in the ongoing tariff dispute. "The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the U.S. won't be a laughing matter".

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. The US Commerce Department says that constitutes a threat to US national security. "The idea that the Canadian steel that's in military vehicles in the United States, the Canadian aluminum that makes your fighter jets is somehow now a threat".

President Donald Trump talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the Women's Entrepreneurship Finance event at the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, Saturday, July 8, 2017.

Canadian labour productivity fell by 0.3 per cent in the first quarter, reflecting a deceleration in business output from the previous quarter, while hours worked accelerated, Statistics Canada said.

Adding to the uncertainty is European anger over Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the worldwide nuclear agreement with Iran.

"There is no reason to use this provision to consider imposing tariffs on the automobile industry, and this appears to be either an attempt to affect domestic politics ahead of the election or for some other transactional objective regarding ongoing trade discussions".

"It is necessary and urgent to impose measures equivalent to the measures implemented by" the U.S., said the statement issued by the Mexican government.

What administration officials have insisted is only a "trade dispute" appears closer to becoming a trade war.

After returning from the G-7 finance ministers summit in Canada, Mnuchin made the case that the USA has a $2 billion steel surplus with Canada and a almost $26 billion services surplus, and should consider making an exemption for its northern neighbor, according to the sources.

Donald Trump's economic adviser says the US has asked Canada to hold one-on-one North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations as trilateral talks sputter.

In April, Canada tried to address what Trump said were concerns about Chinese steel and aluminum being dumped into Canada and then being shipped into the United States.
