Putin: Mueller Indictments Of Russians Driven By U.S. Politics

Russia 'not trying to split EU', says Putin

President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that a new hypersonic intercontinental missile would enter service next year and guarantee Russian Federation maintains military parity with the United States.

Putin's 16th call-in marathon, which lasted 4½ uninterrupted hours, provided a window into the president's mind-set - and a prime display of the stagecraft that the Kremlin deploys to boost Putin's image and promote his worldview to Russian households.

Vladimir Putin, on a living standards drive at the start of a new presidential term, is expected to try to fix Russians' everyday problems on live TV later on Thursday, handing out real-time orders to regional governors and government ministers.

"Everybody has an interest in getting the sanctions lifted, us too", Putin said. "The understanding that a third world war could be the end of civilization should restrain us from taking extreme steps on the global arena that are highly risky for modern civilization".

Commenting on a question on the aluminum and steel tariffs recently imposed by the United States against Europe, Canada and Mexico, President Putin remarked that these restrictive measures are essentially sanctions.

On the worldwide front, Putin also took the opportunity to say that Russian Federation would remain in Syria for as long as it was beneficial to Moscow. Well, there you go, you've been hit.

"Ask the (U.S.) Department of State why he does it", Putin said. You've been hit. Dinner is served.

"I hope that there won't be any provocations but, if it happens, I think it would have very serious consequences for Ukrainian statehood in general", Putin said.

Putin first said in March 2016 that the country's military campaign in Syria was coming to an end.

Russia is still grappling with economic sanctions imposed by the US, the European Union and several other countries after its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and for a pro-Russian uprising in eastern Ukraine that same year.

Asked about his interactions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Putin said political infighting in Washington was hampering their contacts.

"So, we influenced the USA elections, and he gifted us Europe in return?" he asked.

"Infrastructure built in Russian Federation for the World Cup should pay off in the future and be used for the development of popular sports".

The Russian government says total World Cup costs are around $11 billion, not including some infrastructure spending.

"We have no plans to shut anything down", said Putin when asked if social media networks, which are harder to monitor than traditional media, would be blocked in Russian Federation.

"The tragedy we are talking about is bad, and I feel immensely sorry for the victims and their families, but this investigation must be objective and comprehensive", he said.
