Suicides have risen 30 percent since 1999

Suicides have risen 30 percent since 1999

Dr. Stone noted that historically some western states have the highest rates of suicide, which could be related to the fact that they tend to be more rural. The number of suicides during that period peaked in 2014, when the state saw 606 suicides, the CDC reported.

Nationally, the suicide rate has jumped by 25 percent in almost 20 years.

As we continue to see headlines in the news about suicide amongst celebrities we have to remember that suicidal thoughts can affect everyone.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. But the signs aren't always clear.

The CDC recommends that the government, health care system, employers, schools, and community organizations treat suicide as a public health issue and provides resources on its website.

The CDC suggested a wide-ranging list of ways for communities to help those contemplating suicide.

In just one week, two high profile celebrities were found dead after authorities said they committed suicide.

"Depression is the leading cause, the leading mental health condition associated with suicide", she said.

This article has been adapted from its original source. Other problems often contribute to suicide risk, such as relationship problems, substance use, or financial or job stress.

Montana had the highest suicide rate, at 29.2 per 100,000 people per year, while the District of Columbia had the lowest, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people per year.

The CDC study found, too, that suicide increased among all sexes, ages, races and ethnic groups.

Stories like theirs are becoming less uncommon - research shows suicide rates are rising across the country.

"Statistics show that if we can reach troubled people before, even in the midst of suicide ideation, there is a good chance they can be helped", said Schumer.

Funding has also stalled for the 24-hour, toll-free Suicide Lifeline at $7 million per year since 2013, according to Schumer.

Those who need help can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for help at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The national attention following the suicides of Bourdain and Spade has meant an increase in calls to suicide hotlines like the one here in Philadelphia, which is staffed 24/7 by experts who can help you out in any crisis.

"Things like changes in behavior different from our normal so you know maybe not wanting to go out with friends anymore", Marx said.
