Vienna is one of the cities being considered as the venue for a possible summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday.

Trump reiterated his belief that he has been tough on Russian Federation, before calling for President Vladimir Putin to be given a seat at the table with the small group of influential world leaders.

The SCO gathering comes as US President Donald Trump meets America's closest allies in Canada for a two-day G7 summit, which concludes Saturday.

Speaking during a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao, Putin emphasized that the bloc members are anxious about the US move.

Despite tensions in the US-Russia relationship, Putin did not rule out the possibility of a meeting with Trump. Trump's suggestion of readmitting Russian Federation was unlikely to gain any traction at the gathering of the group that includes the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Italy, France and Germany.

"Once again, nothing concrete was said", Putin said, referring to the G7 statement.

"The president of the United States himself has repeatedly said that he considered such a meeting appropriate, and I confirm that this is indeed the case".

Putin says "Russia welcomes the planned summit of the US and North Korea and notes China's big contribution to helping settle the crisis on the Korean Peninsula".

Its member states also include four former Soviet Central Asian republics, Pakistan and India.

In his address, Chinese President Xi Jinping also made a veiled dig at the United States for withdrawing from the deal, noting that China was willing to work with Russian Federation and other countries to protect the deal.

Putin said Russian Federation will honour its part of the deal, adding Moscow is still in favour of the "unconditional implementation" of the pact.

Trump's rejection of the global climate accord and Iran nuclear deal, supported by the European Union and Canada is going to be another flashpoint in the increasingly acrimonious relationship between Washington and its Western allies.

Now in the wake of the US withdrawal from the pact, "SCO members may use granting full membership to Iran as a way to demonstrate support for [Tehran] and the nuclear agreement", said Dawn Murphy, professor of global security studies at the US Air War College.

Asked for his impression of the Chinese leader for life, Putin said Xi was "approachable and sincere", as well as "perhaps the only state leader who has celebrated my birthday with me". "Why are we having a meeting without Russian Federation being in the meeting?"

Xi and Putin and others pledged their support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal from which President Donald Trump withdrew the US last month.

His comments ahead of the G7 summit prompted fresh criticism from some USA lawmakers.

On May 8, Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.
