California 3-Way Split Initiative Qualifies For November Ballot

CALIFORNIA – A milestone is met for groups wanting to split California into three different states

An initiative to divide California into three states has received enough signatures to qualify it for the November ballot, the California secretary of state's office confirmed Tuesday.

A weird and controversial plan to split California into three states has qualified for the November ballot, and if approved by the voters would begin the process to permanently change the U.S. Congress.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist and all-around busybody Ted Draper is back with another effort to chop up California into allegedly more manageable portions.

According to the ballot measure, Northern California will consist of counties in the northern part of the state, including Sacramento and San Francisco Counties.

Southern California- This would include 12 counties: San Diego, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, Mono, Madera, Inyo, Tulare, Fresno, Kings, Kern and Imperial counties. More recently, a group of Californians proposed the state leave the union altogether (they called it Calexit) after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016.

Scholar Vikram David Amar from the University of IL has written about the California statehood proposals.

"The unanimous support for CAL 3 from all 58 of California's counties to reach this unprecedented milestone in the legislative process is the signal that across California, we are united behind CAL 3 to create a brighter future for everyone", Draper said in a statement in April after the signatures were collected.

If the proposal ever makes it to Capitol Hill, one hurdle in a Republican-controlled Congress would be the idea of awarding the deep blue state four more senators, likely Democratic senators. The latest proposal for splitting up the Golden State would create the states of Northern California, Southern California and a narrow central coast strip retaining the name California.

Many times. The California Legislature agreed to split off areas south of the Tehachapi Mountains into a separate territory in 1859.

Counties would continue to fall under the purview of the existing California government until each new state established its own separate government and adopted a constitution.

The proposal would see California shrunk down to its coastal areas between Los Angeles and Sonoma Counties.

A proposal to split California into three states will be on California's November ballot.

But Draper believes politicians in Washington or Sacramento would be taking an even bigger risk by ignoring the will of voters fed up with a state government he says has long stopped working for them.

Californians have talked about breaking up with themselves ever since California became a state in 1850. If the Legislature failed to act in the given time frame, California's debts would be divided among the new states based on population.

He has described California as a state with crumbling bridges and roads, a struggling, underfunded education system and oppressively high taxes.
