President Trump, family and foundation sued by NY attorney general

Donald Trump was sued Thursday over claims he misused cash from his charitable foundation for personal expenses

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump and his three oldest adult children, accusing the president and his family of misusing Trump's charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, in a "pattern of illegal conduct".

The 41-page petition to New York's Supreme Court cites voluminous evidence, including photos and emails, in alleging that Trump used his foundation's charitable assets to pay legal fees, to promote his hotels and other businesses and to buy personal items.

The lawsuit seeks to dissolve the Trump Foundation, Ms Underwood said.

In a couple of tweets, Trump called the case "ridiculous" and said he would not settle the lawsuit.

Barbara Underwood, the attorney general, asked a NY state judge to dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation, and impose bans on Trump, his sons Donald Jr and Eric, and his daughter from holding leadership roles in NY charities.

Underwood's suit was filed the same day the Justice Department's inspector general issued a report sharply criticizing the FBI and former Director James Comey for their handling of the investigation into Clinton's email practices.

The foundation lawsuit and the referrals to the federal agencies are the latest of Mr. Trump's voluminous legal challenges, starting with the ongoing investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, into ties between Mr. Trump, his associates and Russian Federation. "His disciples brought it when we would not settle". It claims that the foundation came to be "co-opted" by the campaign.

President Trump took to Twitter on Thursday, responding to the suit.

The lawsuit challenges the foundation's role in an Iowa fundraiser for military veterans that Trump organized in 2016 instead of taking part in one of the Republican debates. He promised to shut it down in 2016 but could not while the NY investigation was ongoing.

Underwood included copies of internal Trump Organization emails showing that then-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was trying to manage high-profile donations before voters went to the caucuses.

The Attorney General's office told the FEC that it has found that the coordination between Trump Foundation and Trump campaign on the fundraiser and disbursement may have violated several aspects of the Federal Election Campaign Act relating to in-kind contributions and soft money.

The AG's office wants the foundation dissolved.

"This is politics at its very worst", the spokesperson for the foundation said in a statement. Trump presented enlarged copies of checks to veterans groups at campaign events. Allegations of misdeeds connected to the Trump Foundation had swirled during the 2016 presidential elections, but the topic had been overshadowed during the early days of the Trump presidency.
