Trump: Fake News is ‘Our Country’s Biggest Enemy’

Singapore summit a 'crucial and necessary step' - EU

And not surprisingly, when it comes to President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, there is a mixture of enthusiasm and skepticism in the air.

In their joint statement Kim agreed to the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" - a stock phrase favoured by Pyongyang that stopped short of longstanding USA demands for North Korea to give up its atomic arsenal in a "verifiable" and "irreversible" way.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Tuesday that he wants Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to brief senators on the substance of what the two nations discussed, including whether US troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula would remain.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned", Pompeo said.

"The core of complete denuclearization is a verification".

Talks are to be led on the US side by Pompeo and, according to the agreement, a "relevant, high-level" North Korean official.

South Korea's Culture Ministry said on Thursday (Jun 14) that it is looking into potential opportunities for South Korean tourism to North Korea, amid a thaw on the divided peninsula, reported Yonhap news agency.

At the time, Pyongyang had just launched its sixth and largest nuclear test since it began its programme, in 2006.

Adam Schiff, a top US Democrat and staunch Trump critic, warned the standoff was far from resolved. -North Korea talks and that "dangerous regimes should de-nuclearize", Netanyahu speculated that while much of the global community may be in favor of a future deal, countries like South Korea and Japan, within missile range of North Korea, may be far more resistant.

Trump has credited his "maximum pressure" campaign of crippling trade and economic sanctions for bringing Kim to the negotiating table and vowed to keep them in place until North Korea complies with its promises.

"So is a dangerously naive president", Schiff said.

Party poopers on some, but not all morning TV news programs, were noted North Korea still has all the warheads and missile systems it had before Trump's Singapore sit-down with Kim.

Following the summit, Trump said verification processes had been discussed during his meeting with Kim, and that Kim understood it would involve accepting large numbers of U.S. and worldwide personnel into the reclusive country.

There was no USA response to the report, but sanctions had not been mentioned in the statement signed by the two leaders at the conclusion of the summit.

The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the United States would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea. North Korean state TV, for its part, hailed Kim for "opening a new chapter" in relations with the US.

In Pyongyang, commuters crowded round the spread of images.

"Yesterday's conflict does not have to be tomorrow's war", Trump, 71, said following more than four hours of intense talks with Kim, 34, which he described as "honest, direct and productive".

Ordinary North Koreans consistently voice unequivocal support for the leadership when speaking to foreign media.

Supporters of the Iran nuclear deal drew a different conclusion from the Singapore summit.

During the forum, Baek Jong-chun, chief of the institute's board of directors, said, "Including details is out of character with a joint document for the historic summit", referring to a controversy over the Singapore document having no mention of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization (CVID)" of the Korean Peninsula, a demand the USA has made regarding how Pyongyang will denuclearize.

The remarks came one day after US President Donald Trump said he will stop what he called expensive and provocative "war games" with South Korea as long as the North and the US "negotiated in good faith".
