FBI Lawyer Told Colleague To Go Easy On Hillary During Investigation

Comey 'broke norms but not biased' - agency watchdog report

Trump I did a great service by firing Comey

A highly anticipated Department of Justice watchdog review has reportedly found that although former FBI Director James Comey "deviated" from the agency's procedures in his handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, his decisions did not appear to be motivated by political bias.

President Donald Trump said the inspector general's report on the Hillary Clinton email investigation proves that the FBI and the Justice Department acted out of bias against him, but the report itself does not back up his claims.

Trump's defenders, including his lawyer and some Republicans, have seized on the report to justify Comey's ouster, while Democrats were concerned that the report would be used to undercut the ongoing Russian Federation probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller, whose appointment followed Comey' s departure.

The president on Friday also blasted two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents cited in Thursday's much-anticipated report, Lisa Page and Peter Strzok. "According to multiple sources who spoke to The Washington Post, in a text from August 2016 Page texted Strzok: "[Trump's] not ever going to become president, right?

On the day of Trump's election, for example, Strzok said he was "depressed", and Page said "OMG THIS IS F***ING TERRIFYING". Right?!" Page texted Strzok.

Former Clinton campaign chair John Podesta also rebuked Comey in an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo on "Cuomo Prime Time". Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) have asked the Justice Department to hand over all unrevised drafts of the inspector general report that was released Thursday, amid concerns that "people may have changed the report in a way that obfuscates your findings".

Then-FBI director Comey concluded in July 2016 that while there was "evidence of potential violations" regarding the handling of classified information, "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring a case against Clinton. It also said some FBI agents showed anti-Trump bias, but that bias did not affect the investigation. "We concluded that Comey's unilateral announcement was inconsistent with Department policy and violated long-standing Department practice and protocol by, among other things, criticizing Clinton's uncharged conduct", the report says. The IG added he was "deeply troubled" by anti-Trump texts sent between two people on the investigation.

"When you read the report, it's nearly like Comey, he goes point after point about how guilty Hillary is, and then he said, 'But we're not going to do anything about it.' The IG report was a horror show, I thought that one line of conclusion was ridiculous", Trump said.
