England have been slow starters too often on this stage, but they tore into Tunisia from the first whistle with not the slightest hint of World Cup stage fright, passing and moving with fierce intensity and a movement that left the opposition bewildered.

"I'm really proud. We did a lot of work on training field and were itching to play".

In the final third of the first half, Tunisia started to look more solid and belief amongst the players grew.

England pushed in search of regaining the lead throughout the second period - and they did so in the 91 minute when Kane glanced in the victor.

Tunisia equalized in the 35th when Ferjani Sassi converted a penalty, shooting beyond the diving Jordan Pickford.

The ineffective Sterling gave way to Marcus Rashford with just over 20 minutes to go and the Manchester United man nearly fashioned a chance straight away with a jinking run into the box.

There were bonuses elsewhere for Southgate, especially in the performance of Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier, who gave a consummate performance as a defender but also going forward, where he was a constant threat in open play and set-pieces. Low expectations for this year's overhauled team were dispelled early in Russian Federation when Kane reacted quickly to score after John Stones' header was saved. But there can be no denying the value of the feel-good factor that will now infuse England ahead of Sunday's Group G encounter with Panama in Nizhny Novgorod.

Kane - who has now scored 15 goals in 25 caps - was twice wrestled to the ground in the box without the video assistant referee awarding a penalty.

"Maybe there was a bit of justice at the end", Kane said. I've not seen the penalty [awarded against England] back but, from my point of view, it didn't look like one. "We kept fighting and got the late goal and a big win", England midfielder Jordan Henderson said.

"Whilst you would have heard all the interviews of having "played well, being over it and building to Panama", it would have been hard over the next few days".

For about half-an-hour it felt as though England were going to win the World Cup.

For Harry Kane, who scored both of England's goals, they clearly were.

Harry Maguire is a serious danger as an attacking threat but can be slack in possession. "Even though the clock was running down, we stayed patient and waited for opportunities", said the coach, whose team join Belgium in claiming maximum points from their first game in the section.
