Alex Hales scooped a one-handed catch to remove Travis Head England v Australia 2nd ODI Cardiff
England thrashed the highest score in the history of ODI cricket to set up the most crushing defeat - in terms of runs - ever inflicted upon Australia.
England's Alex Hales was the top scorer with 147, while Johney Bairstow made 139 before the team proudly walked to the pavilion for the loss of six wickets.
As England closed down to bettering their own previous record of 444 runs that came against Pakistan at the same venue, it was skipper Eoin Morgan who smashed a 30-ball 67 with the help of six sixes to help his side reach a monumental total of 481 runs in 50 overs.
He fell short of that milestone today, being run out for 82, but Bairstow, Hales and Morgan were on hand to inflict the punishment.
Four balls later the Yorkshireman was dropped by Marcus Stoinis who grassed a catch on the run at deep long-off from Andrew Tye when he was on 32. Only once in the 56-year history of List A cricket - when Surrey scored 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007 - has any side scored more.
Bairstow has arguably been England's best player across all three formats over the past year and his century, coming off 69 balls, was his fourth in ODIs in 2018. The pitch is unlikely to allow the sort of free-scoring that England managed in Nottingham and the highest score in the Royal London One-Day Cup at the Riverside was 299. The 31-year old now scored a record 5443 runs for England in his 6187 ODI runs.
Australia have now lost five ODI series in succession and eight of their last nine ODIs against England.
England captain Eoin Morgan: "It's as close as we've ever been to a flawless day". Australia were unable to climb the steep mountain before them, falling to 239 all out and a 242-run defeat.
Adil Rashid has developed into a classy performer for England but the contributions of Moeen Ali in this series have been just as important to the team's success.
Australia, however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.
"There were some outstanding performances and we were relentless both with the bat and the ball", he said. "I know they are a really inexperienced attack and we just kept talking about what we could do and what we said we would do and trying to keep it calm and simple", Paine added.
