Under Obama if children crossed the border with their parents they were only separated if officials suspected the adult of human trafficking smuggling posing a national security risk or when their parenthood could not be verified

A second visit could give her the opportunity to bounce back from the backlash surrounding her last trip - provided, of course, that a lot more consideration goes into her wardrobe this time around. Many have yet to be reunited.

Melania Trump seemingly left her controversial jacket at home for her latest trip. After federal officials began separating families in May and sending kids to shelters while their parents awaited prosecution, the public reacted with outrage.

Melania Trump just made it as clear as black and white. she's NOT about to get caught in another wardrobe firestorm en route to her second trip to the border.

The choice baffled the Internet and spawned a slew of memes about what the first lady, a former model, may have meant.

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message", Grisham said at the time. But the first lady's husband, President Donald Trump, undercut the no-message message by tweeting that his wife was saying she really doesn't care about the "fake news" media.

Last Thursday, Trump spent about one hour meeting with staff and touring the Upbring New Hope Children's Shelter in McAllen, a Department of Health and Human Services-assisted facility that houses and cares for unaccompanied minors who have entered the country illegally until they can be placed with family or volunteers.

Demonstrators in white clergy robes linked arms sitting across the street and chanted "reunite", while others waved signs that bore slogans such as "Stop caging families", "Stop separating families" and "Abolish ICE". Another classroom had five cribs lined up against a wall.

The agency would continue to refer single adults for prosecution for illegally crossing the border, said the CBP chief, adding that border agents would also separate children from adults if the child was in danger or if the adult had a criminal record.

Melania Trump again visited the U.S. -Mexico border this week - cementing her place as the only member of the Trump family to travel to the region as her husband's administration grapples with fallout from its decision to detain children and families. "She's advocating for quality care for these children under hard circumstances", Stephanie Grisham told reporters.

Protesters spent Thursday morning outside a facility for detained children in Tucson that's operated by the non-profit Southwest Key.

After a round-table discussion, during which the first lady heard from officials who work along the border, the first lady was given a tour of the US Customs and Border Protection Facility in Tucson.

In Phoenix, her motorcade swept past a protest of several dozen and a large, inflatable depiction of the president in a Ku Klux Klan robe.

She did not wear the jacket Thursday.
